Tired of the same ENGin session routine? If your English sessions are starting to feel repetitive, it might be time to shake things up! Here are some creative and realistic ways to make learning fun, whether you're teaching teenagers or adults.
For Teenagers
Make a Memes
Memes are a huge part of teen culture. Ask them to create a meme in English about something they’ve experienced or something they’re learning. It’s a great way to practice humor and cultural understanding.
Hold a Friendly Debate Club
Teens love sharing their opinions, so why not turn it into a fun debate? Choose topics they’ll get excited about, like “Would you rather live in a world without the internet or movies?” Encourage them to defend their side with reasons. This activity boosts vocabulary and teaches persuasive language.
Predict the Future
Encourage students to imagine their lives or the world 10 years from now. It’s a light-hearted way to practice future tense while exploring dreams, ambitions, or funny scenarios.
Try a Digital Scavenger Hunt
Get your student to share their screen, open Google Images, and search for any image online, like a rare animal or a world landmark, etc. Have them describe what they find in English—perfect for practicing descriptive language and engaging their curiosity!
Fun Video Challenges
Choose a short, age-appropriate video clip on YouTube and watch it together. Pause to predict what happens next, or have them summarize it afterward. It’s interactive and allows them to share ideas on topics they already enjoy.
For Adults
Real-World Role-Plays
Practice real-life situations, like ordering food, negotiating, or a job interview. Role-playing these scenarios will build confidence in the English language and is especially helpful for learners with specific professional goals.
Book or Movie Discussions
Choose a short article, book excerpt, or movie and discuss it in your next session. This can deepen their language skills and allow you both to connect over shared interests.
News Recaps
Ask your students to summarize a recent news article or event. Many Ukrainians are learning to explain current events in English, especially regarding the war that impacts their daily lives. You can guide them on vocabulary and expressions commonly used in news reporting, helping them build confidence and conversational skills. Remember, if a student prefers not to discuss these topics, skipping this activity and moving on to another conversation is perfectly fine.
Mini-Presentations
Let your adult learners pick a topic they’re passionate about and present it for a few minutes. This will improve their public speaking and storytelling skills and help them organize their thoughts in English.
Break out of the routine and make learning fun with ENGin!
